Many were surprised that Apple’s digital assistant Siri was left out of the new iPad. There were murmurings around the blogosphere that this was due to the less than stellar functionality many encountered using the new software on the iPhone 4S, and that Apple decided against providing it in a new iteration of hardware until it was polished further. But in classic Apple style, it was simply the lack of an acceptable user interface that prevented the use of Siri on the new iPad on launch day. TechCrunch is reporting via a source that Siri will likely be arriving with iOS 6, rumored to be revealed at WWDC in June, and that while the Dictation feature on the new iPad uses Siri technology, Apple is still working on what Siri for iPad will look like.
Even more exciting, or as exciting as rumors can be, is that Apple is supposedly working on releasing APIs for Siri, which would enable other developers to use the technology in their own apps. Here’s hoping that this pans out, as I am so sick of manually turning the page when reading a Kindle book. “Siri, define ‘perfunctory'”.

Why would the Siri interface differ on an iPad?
That’s a good question! I guess we’ll have to wait and see, and to quote Johnny Ive, Apple lead designer, I bet it will be “magical”.

Unfortunately, there was no word of the release of Siri APIs, but as TechCrunch points out, seeing as Siri can now be used to launch apps or post to Twitter and Facebook, we may not be far off from such a release. Aside from those new capabilities, Siri can pull up sports scores and stats, movie times at local theaters, and make reservations at local restaurants. Siri on the iPad will not take up the entire screen, but will rather be contained in a small pop-up window at the bottom of the screen. Interestingly, based on the pictures on Apple’s website, the size of this window appears to be the same as the iPhone’s screen, or about 3.5 inches. […]
