Doom 3 reboot announced for Xbox 360 and PS3, to support head-mounted displays (wait, what?)

id Software and Bethesda Softworks have officially announced the Doom 3: BFG Edition, an update to the most recent release in the storied franchise. In addition to a remastered version of Doom 3 and the expansion Doom 3: Ressurection of Evil, the release will feature the other iterations of the franchise, including the original Doom and Doom 2, as well as a new “lost mission” for Doom 3, which will include seven new levels and a new boss, for a total of two to three extra hours of content. Check out the official announcement trailer below:

Aside from the fact that they’ve tweaked the gameplay to include checkpoint saves and more ammo drops, the new edition will include a flashlight, seemingly rectifying the issue presented in John Carmack’s famous quote from QuakeCon 2010: “The game would have been more enjoyable if people could actually see it.”

Interestingly, the BFG Edition will also enable support for head-mounted displays. Upon hearing of this feature, it might be hard to conjure up what exactly that would mean, as universal head-mounted displays are hardly a piece of common technology found in even the most ardent gamer’s home. Luckily, the Verge was able to test out a prototype of such a device at John Carmack’s office, and demoed the display in the below video:

Based on the video, it would appear as though panning within the field-of-view immediately in front of the player can be accomplished using the head-mounted display, while strafing and turning are still accomplished using the right analog stick. According to Carmack, the hope is that HMDs will soon come down in price, and that the Oculus Rift prototype he is using will be released as an approximately $500 do-it-yourself kit. He even holds out a glimmer of hope that Doom 3: BFG Edition will be offered in a bundle with such an HMD. Though unlikely, should such a bundle be released, one can only hope the duct tape used on the final product is of the utmost quality.
